Estimate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using Henry Equations

Learn how to use the Henry Equations to estimate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).

When giving recommendations, nutrition professionals need to take into account several characteristics of their patients. Firstly, they assess their patient's dietary habits, body composition, and health status. After that, recommendations based on each individual are given.

To do that, professionals normally estimate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and physical activity level to determine their patients' daily energy requirements. So that Nutrium can be even more comprehensive when it comes to nutritional assessment, we added new BMR predictive equations, Henry equations (Henry, 2005).

How were the Henry Equations assessed?

These new equations were developed using the Oxford database in which the revision BMR data from several studies were made and analyzed, resulting in a new formulation of several BMR predictive equations. These new equations were referenced in the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) report on the Dietary Reference Values for energy, in 2011, as recommended to estimating average requirements for energy intake in healthy populations.

Accordingly, The Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG), a Specialist Group of the British Dietetic Association, also recommended the use of these equations to estimate BMR in the hospital setting.

Henry equations join several other BMR equations such as, Harris-Benedict equation, Harris-Benedict equation revised, Mifflin St. Jeor equation, Katch Mcardle equation, Cunningham equation, WHO Equation, already integrated into Nutrium.

How are these new equations assessed?

These equations take into account different age groups, gender, and weight.

Formulas according to age groups and gender are listed below according to the study source.

Where to calculate BMR using the Henry Equations on the software?

These equations have been added to the Planning section of the appointment layout. After basic information (age and gender) and measurements (weight) have been registered, the software will automatically assess BMR using Henry equations.

Further integrations

We want to continue improving and adapting the software so that professionals based in the UK can have the right tools to provide proper nutritional counseling. Check here the Dietary Reference Values of Food Energy and Nutrients for the United Kingdom integration.
